Unit III - Introduction to Synthesis
Unit III introduces concepts of sound synthesis. Up to now, we have been recording and manipulating sound. Using a software based electronic studio, we will use synthesizers to create timbre. This unit begins by learning the fundamentals of using a mixer, signal flow, application of effects, etc. Working with subtractive synthesis, we will experiment with oscillators, filters, envelope generators, LFO's, etc. to create new and interesting timbres. We will explore the differences between a synthesizer and a sampler, create drum loops using a drum computer and continue to work with MIDI recording and editing.
