General Information
-
A fugue is a contrapuntal composition based on a relatively short motive (the Subject), or a set of motives, creating a very unified composition.
-
The composition is segmented based on restatements of the subject in different keys
-
These restatements (or Middle Entries) are separated by episodes consisting of developmental or modulatory material using motives from the subject.
-
The primary motivic material is presented in the Exposition. This material then serves as the basis for various different developmental processes as the piece progresses.
