• Augmentation - the lengthening of rhythmic values by a specific ratio (i.e., 2:1 or 3:1).

• Diminution - the shorting of rhythmic values by a specific ration (i.e., 2:1 or 3:1).

• Inversion - changing the contour of the material (flipping it upside down).

• Stretto - overlapping statements of the material.
