Course Description

Review of the harmonic material of tonal music with attention to the analytical and written understanding of both diatonic and chromatic harmony. Review of phrase and period designs, followed by analysis of music exemplifying such formal designs as binary, ternary, rondo, variations, sonata and fugue.

Work Requirements

Reading, listening and analytical preparation, class participation, analysis assignments and a final project. You will receive an assignment just about every class period, plus a final project involving a longer music writing exercise and class presentation.

Evaluation

Homework - 70%         Final Project - 20%         Preparation/Discussion - 10%

Attendance

Due to the nature of this course, attendance is required at all class meetings. Unexcused absences will result in a lowering of your grade by three percentage points per absence.

Homework

Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the day they are due. You can expect a homework assignment just about every class. Plagiarism is an unacceptable behavior. For purposes of evaluation, I will expect all assignments to fully reflect your own work. Any assignments that appear to be a collaborative effort will automatically receive a grade of 0.
